Haiku Kukai 1

Global Haiku Tradition, PACE June 2005

black board
moving lips
lost in daydream

starry night
on a country road
new love

sirens growing near
traffic blocks the way
someone dear to you

white picket fence
midnight dance under
the stars

on new year’s day
a jazz parade
one touch cured me

sun above me
I float on water
like a compass needle

sidewalk ants
a toddler points and says
“dog”

traveling overseas
a handmade quilt wraps a soldier
with memories of home

E-mail from Germany
his cologne
on an empty t-shirt

soft sunlight
hits her face
good morning

candle lit room
fresh shampooed hair
cuddled under grandma's quilts

in cold sun’s light
she listens . . .
she is a mother

sewing with mother
heritage passed down
year after year

spring flowers
grandma kneeling at
grandpa's grave

you finally arrive
I prayed so long
by God’s grace

clear, cool sky
the sun sets over
Lake Tahoe

first one breathing
second one not
holding my breath and praying

Summer afternoon
dandelion seeds floating by
wishing dad’s return

today you left
new owners
ruler of the house

first kiss
at father's bedside
forever

twinkle in my eye
dimples start to show
he says my name

dirt track
the flag blowing
in the wind

a sink
two people
avoiding one sponge

brothers in arms
dim cool air
wakes the runners' lungs

tired feet
I slip off my shoes
home at last

my two daughters
blowing bubbles in the yard
my little heroes

dim hospital lights
last kiss stays
on my lips

sirens sound
dust fills the air
complete panic

empty nest
the sound of children
on the playground

church bell rings
choir sings
a white Christmas

icy day
plastic rapping uncontrollably
cannot fall back asleep

along the sunset
the roar of the engine
and the feel of pavement

deceased son's jacket
        still in the coat closet
mother smells his scent

waiting to make love
when are we leaving
car out of gas

streets are calm
snow shimmers
covered trees

raindrops
on the brick streets
our horse and carriage

at the zoo
smiling down at me
the giraffe

empty parking lot at Armory
back home alone
a single red rose

work all day
robot all night
next in line

wedding in july
rain in june
size 6

boys in the garage
    thunderstorm
beating on the pavement

day's sun lowers
father and child
both with achy feet

eyes masked in black
tongue panting
man’s best friend

sun peering through the window
and children playing
I study my summer away

cold snowy night
five years old
daddy’s coming
