Bowling Alley Ginko

by
Marlene Gardner, Donna Hyland, and Starr Dawkins

bowler approaches line
ball in flight
gutter greets an old friend

young first-time bowler
more fascinated
by the ball return

ashtrays fill, bottles empty
old friends laugh
in borrowed shoes

empty bottles, empty lanes
and full ashtrays
closing time

two women drink and flirt
new game begins
guy in the next lane makes the split

ladies’ auxiliary
arrives shaking
snow from their headscarves

pins stand like soldiers
awaiting the cannon's first shot
bowler sips a beer

elegant lady
removes her Jimmy Choo’s
and slips on the rented shoes

league night
beer and bowling pins
both get knocked down

mom pretends
to play Pac man
for the first time

grown-ups sipping beer
pretend not to notice
their kids misbehaving

bumper pads
and lots of giggling
bowling alley birthday
