walking around
in flip flops
sinking in the mud

Andi McCoy (5)

It always seems that the first few days of warmth when I want to wear flip flops, it's muddy. Yet, being stubborn, I wear the flip flops anyway, only to find my feet covered in mud and the flip flops stuck in it. Brittney

This happened to me! I was walking through a muddy parking lot and I stepped in mud because my flip flop got stuck. This haiku is about the struggle we all face, wanting to be spring but it not being ready yet. Phil K

Every summer we go jet skiing at the lake. This reminds me of all the times we would beach the jet skies and go on shore to explore. You have to keep flip flops or sandals with you so you can walk on the rocks. Lindsey

While we have our own schedule and calendars, nature oftentimes has other ideas. While it is technically Spring by our calendar…nature is a little slow on the uptake…then again, I don’t mind too much – the closer we get to the real Spring, the worse and worse my allergies will get! John

rain…

Chonita Ziegler (8)

This haiku reminds me of spring. It gives that seasonal element. Every time it gets warm out and I want to cookout or play outside something comes up and it does not work out. Usually it is rain and it ruins my plan. I get sad about it sometimes because I like the social aspect of it, people coming together. Then if plans fall though, people then do not get together. Rachel Morrison (6)

This haiku shows a different side to springtime. Usually people love the fresh air and sunshine that comes in the spring but the problem is that people have allergies to many things that go into the air at spring time. Thus, this haiku brings memories of when I went back home in spring break and saw a line of people at the pharmacy rushing to obtain their allergy medications. Therefore, spring is wonderful if you do not get congested and I see that this message is being put out in the haiku. Alya

I have the worst allergies in the world. I know it is getting close to the time to prepare for this burden. Even though I take zyrtec and claritan, I still have terrible problems. Lindsey

Jenna Pelej (8)

I really enjoyed this haiku. I believe that the seasons do play a great role in the moods and actions of people. For this reason, I love springtime. Unlike winter, springtime is full of life, warmth, and vibrancy. I really like how this haiku focuses on the sun. I can feel the warmth of the sun and see the pink and yellow hues of the warm sunshine. As the earth comes back to life, so do the people. Lizabeth

As we talked about in class, I really like how this has dual meanings. It could be read with the first two lines together or the last two. I took the first as the warm weather calling people out. However, the other way could be that the sun thaws our souls and everyone brings out their inner child to play. Rachel

new breakup

raindrops on my cheeks

This haiku has a beautiful sadness about it. It's almost as if the weather is reacting to her sadness. It's raining because she's sad, and it tries to comfort her. Brittney

I really like this haiku because I think it really explains the way a lot of people feel after a break up. I see a girl looking up into the sky and seeing the gray clouds, which fit so well with the way she feels. Then I see the raindrops falling as she starts to cry. It’s a mixture of raindrops and tear drops on her cheeks. I think all women can relate to this feeling at some point in their life. Whitney

lost innocence
the orchid
spreads its petals

Joan Tirado

I can imagine a young girl. She knows she is not ready to do what he wants her to do but because she believes she is in love with him she does anyway. Immediately following, she realilzes what she lost. I really like the use of the orchid. Flowers are typically associated with beauty and innocence because they are something so natural. This poem gives you a real sense of the emotions behind it with a real sense of imagery. Lizabeth

This entry expresses the naivity of a flower bud, a growing flower which has not yet been exposed to the world. once the petals are exposed the flower is exposed to the world and all its dangers and corruptions as well as its positives. Metaphorically, I see it as a child learning about the world through the years. Jay

rebirth

Keith Chandler

If we were not given a topic to write about I would instantly recognize this haiku as a spring time haiku because of the seasonal elements it has. I get a feeling of “newness”. I visualize the bright green grass that spring has just brought. The last line, rebirth, makes me visualize the beauty that comes with spring. It’s kind of funny, today I looked outside from the class room window and I realized that I didn’t notice all the trees bloom into life, it was good feeling. Joan

Lindsey Jones

I liked this haiku because when spring time comes I am always surprised at how loud and beautiful the birds sound. Even as the snow is still melting the birds begin to wake up and become active, that’s when I know good whether isn’t far away. Another sure sign of spring is the buds on trees sprouting leaves. This is a spring appropriate haiku. Philip D

Lizabeth Hare

This haiku brings many colors to the readers’ imagination. The dew also brings the smell of spring and the fogginess of a spring morning. Things have changed over night and when the morning comes there is the dew that is just like a mist in the morning. It later dries up and everything is back to normal. The vibrant colors of red and yellow show that the dew is helping the tulips and that they are healthy. Shannon

Although I thought at first that the word choices in this haiku were kind of basic, together they really work to make a good haiku. It is a very vibrant haiku because the reader can really see the red and yellow tulips leaning on their thin green stems because they are so heavy with dew. I like tulips because from afar they look like strong flowers, but in reality they are weak and their petals often do not last in perfect condition. Jenna

Alya Saqer (16)

This haiku encompasses a lot of the fundamental elements in quality haiku writing. We can visualize the bright moon. The reader can feel the cool breeze. The open window in the third line is a good twist, don’t you think? It is so unexpected yet appropriate. Philip D

I love this haiku and think it is really well written. I can just feel the cool breeze coming in through the window, can hear the insects and frogs making noise and smell the fresh cut grass. This haiku has the seasonal element and involves the senses. Cindie

I used to love the springtime living in the country when it was the perfect temperature outside at night. I would open my window and let the dense, cool, moist air flow into my room and just massage my soul. It was the best way to fall asleep. You wake up so refreshed. It is almost like sleeping outdoors. Keith

Alyssa Owens

I really can relate to this poem. Not specifically but because a friend of mine (that I had to watch be buried recently) has a birthday coming up. It's really hard to watch someone so young be buried especially because of the scenario. It made me think about spring being so glamorous, but you still have to be rational and think there are ups and downs to every scenario of life. I liked the transition it brought a great impact. Amy

It’s on the verge of becoming a cliché, but I’m still a sucker for the dichotomy between Spring being about rebirth, and the death of something. The beginning of the haiku fills one with the wonder and beauty in change, while the ending reminds us that some change can be bad, or depressing. John

New York smells
Food, pollution, flowers
Spring time

Amy Hoffstetter

I’ve never been to NYC, but I could sense the city in this. They always talk about the pollution. Mix that with spring and I’m sure it would be an interesting sight and smell. I can almost smell the combination from this one. Phil K

Whitney Minor

I really enjoyed this haiku, because it takes me back to my childhood. I remember all the kids got so excited for the first day teachers would let kids go out on the playground. We had been trapped inside all winter and were finally free again. I can still smell the rain on the black top and see the kids running everywhere. Rachel

Spring afternoon
Water trickles
Off of the purple lilacs

Whitney Minor

This haiku just reminds me of spring. I am very allergic to lilacs and when ever I am around them I just start to get hives and begin to itch and sneeze. The water trickling off of the flowers can either be from rain or because they have been freshly watered. I like that versatile element of the haiku and bringing two different images to the reader. The scene is set very well with the beginning line and there are many colors that the haiku bring. Shannon

Spring-
The time for young love
Makes me sick

John Wright

I really think this haiku is so funny. Most people are excited to step outside and enjoy the warm breeze and I do find it humorous that, sometimes, you can’t help but notice all of the love in the air. Everywhere you go there a couples holding hands and being happy. For some people, it might spoil their new spring time! Joan

This entry has me visualizing a older woman, divorced, chain smoking drinking heavily all winter and spring comes around and she see's the happy couples around. Her heart is still bitter and resentful from the divorce. shared custody of the kids with her estranged husband and job hasn't given her a raise in half a decade as she battles inflation. As a result of these circumstances, of which she associates with her husband she bitterly resents men. Jay

I can see how some people are bitter about springtime because not only are romances blooming among people but even squirrels are getting it on. It could be frustrating to feel like you are the only one who is not blossoming in terms of romance. Keith

days get warmer…
my deodorant
gets a work out

John Wright (17)

I love this haiku based on that my deodorant malfunctions at the hottest days of the year. I mean there are so many brands out there but the problem is that not all are that strong and many work good for three hours before they are gone. I don’t know if I just sweat in excess relative to the normal human but there must be a deodorant out there that can work overtime. Anyway, this haiku makes you feel the heat and the wetness of the shirt that you wear. I like that this haiku utilizes humor and talks about a subject that many do not usually put in normal conversation. Alya

Cindie Zelhart (8)

I think this haiku was written very well. It gives me the sense of warmth. Even though I have only visited a farm once, I feel I can at least imagine that moment very well. I also imagine it is quite and peaceful as well. Lorin

crack of the bat
smell of popcorn
another double header

Cindie Zelhart (14)

I can really relate to this haiku, because I played softball for 15 years. There is always something different about double headers versus just a one game night. Double headers usually start early in the morning and go until night. There are always specific smells that you smell when out on the field, I always remember the smell of the grass as the sun hits it, along with the people preparing the food for the day to come. I also really like this because I feel like I can actually hear the bat cracking. I think it has a lot of great elements that make it a great haiku. Whitney

I like the senses that are used in this haiku a lot. All of my siblings play baseball or softball so we are at the fields constantly and even if you are the first game, you can smell the popcorn popping and hear the players warming up with all the drills they do. Andi

Deirdre Fields

I like this one because my mom gets out Easter things early and she keeps them in a tub, but my brothers and sisters like to go through the tubs to see what is in them and then they track the grass everywhere. It even gets stuck on my dog’s nose and he takes it with him too. Andi

only thin and blonde
on spring break
please

Deirdre Fields

I catch a lot of sarcasm. This is a girl saying this to me. There is a lot of pressure on a girl appearance wise and I think the “spring break” craze has really torn woman’s egos to pieces because there is this stereotype of a typical spring break girl and it really is a lot of pressure to reach. This poem really stood out to me. Amy

At first I didn’t like this haiku because it thought of it from a guy’s point of view and it was annoying to think that guys are that shallow. When I read it again though, I thought that it could also be a girl’s thought. She is pleading to someone be thin and blonde by spring break. It is definitely a thought that goes through the minds of many girls before spring break because they want to be in prime shape on the beach. It also made me laugh because while on spring break I overheard many guys talking about girls, basically rating them as they walked by. It made me realize that you cannot care about anyone else’s thoughts or opinions because someone will always have one and you can’t please them all. Jenna

we force tulips
on the windowsill
springtime

Deirdre Fields

I like the way this haiku starts. It sounds like this is a joint effort, maybe a family project. The choice of using the word force makes me think that the people are ready for springtime and by forcing the tulip to bloom early, they will force spring to arrive earlier also. I can just see the pot of flowers sitting on the windowsill in full bloom cheering up the family kitchen. Cindie
