STRAWBERRY LOVE
Selected Haiku

by
Jane Millikin

This haiku collection was written during my Junior year at Millikin University in 2002. The following were chosen out of the many haiku I’ve written because each one is significant to my life. In just four months, I’ve learned how to write haiku, senryu, haibun, and rengay among other related types of poetry. I tend to stick to haiku and senryu more often when I write. I’m hoping to get some of my writing published, and continue to write in my spare time.

I chose the title of this collection "Strawberry Love" first because my signature haiku is:

          last strawberry
          he snatches it
          sharing half with me

Second, I named it "Strawberry Love" because of the love I have for my boyfriend. Quite a few of my haiku were written with him in mind.

Andy writes,

Most of Jane’s haiku are emotional and have deep meaning behind them. My personal favorite of hers is:

          storm brewing
          she stands
          at the stove

I like this one because readers get a sense of an angry woman cooking at the stove. The word "brewing" relates to her cooking. Add the word "storm" to it and suddenly anger is part of her haiku.
