Description
IN350
/ English 340, Studies in Poetry: Global Haiku Tradition examines
the origins and spread of Japanese poetics from Japan around the
world, with a special focus on the adaptation of haiku into other
cultures and languages.
A special feature of the course students will conduct interviews
with leading international poets, editors and scholars of contemporary
haiku. We will study the history of haiku and related poetics
in Japan, and then examine the contemporary internalization of
haiku in various international cultures.
Many
students get their work published in the haiku journals, online
haiku web-magazines and newspaper columns such as Lee Gurga's
"Haiku: People's Poetry" column published in the Springfield
newspaper, the Illinois Times.

Dr. Gurga prefers haiku with a seasonal reference, publishing
haiku in conjunction with the current season (so submit haiku
with current year seasonal connections).

Most
classes begin with an immediate application, quiz or short response
writing based on the reading assignment. All reading assignments
must be completed before class so you can complete applied writings
and other in-class activities.
Attendance Policy
I am very strict about attendance. You are allowed three absences
without penalty. I do not want to know why you are absent. After
three absences, you are considered to be excessively absent and
five per cent of your semester grade will be subtracted from your
semester score for each day of excessive absence. Of course, extended
illness will be exempt to this absence policy, usually resulting
in an incomplete for the semester.
Informal

Quick,
informal assignments will be graded with a simple check-system
(+) (check) or (–) indicating completion of the assignment.
These grades indicate that
100% (plus) you have done an excellent,
thoughtful writing,
50% (check) you have completed the
assignment adequately, or
0% (minus) you have not fulfilled
the assignment and cannot make it up.
The
other assignments are considered formal which means that they should
be printed, carefully edited, revised and designed for maximum effectiveness
with the intended audience.
